A few things that actually help before a midterm

Hey Reader,

For students in UVic or Camosun summer courses, midterms are coming up fast. These are a few things that tend to make a real difference in the week or two beforehand.

Work through past exams. Most professors post them. Do the questions with your notes closed, mark yourself honestly, then figure out what you got wrong and why.

Stop highlighting. It feels productive and isn't. If you can't explain a concept in your own words without looking at your notes, you don't know it yet.

Wear earplugs during the exam. Exam rooms are noisier than people expect. Earplugs are almost always allowed and they make it a lot easier to focus, especially if you're prone to distraction.

Protect your sleep in the final two nights. Staying up late the night before costs more than it gains. Memory consolidates during sleep, not during cramming.

Go to office hours. Most students don't. Your professor knows what's on the exam.

If you're feeling stuck in one of your STEM courses, that's exactly what we help with at Heywood Academies. One or two targeted sessions before midterm can make a meaningful difference.

Hey Reader, PHYS 110 and 111 are among the most failed courses at UVic. A lot of first-year students go in thinking it will be similar to high school physics. It isn't. The course moves fast, the content gets locked week by week, and the tests are entirely multiple-choice. That last part trips up a lot of people because multiple-choice physics requires a different kind of preparation than most students expect. The resources provided in these courses are actually not bad. There are lots of...
